A traveling salesman peddling soap offered a costly premium to buyers and asked payment in advance to save future visits. Purchases, typically two to six dollars, were paid, but the shampooing premium never arrived and the money vanished, according to the Springfield Times.

Fort Randall Post Office Discontinued and Landmark Stands

On September 80th the post office at Fort Randall was discontinued with patrons supplied from Gross by rural free delivery. Established before the Civil War it was one of the region's few military posts and for years the only Gregory county post office. Major Mc Laughlin, though stripped of honors, remains a landmark guardian as crumbling buildings fade away and government land passes to the state. The piece notes political loyalty among stalwart Republicans across Black Hills counties, with Pennington County mostly supporting the party line despite shifts in convention outcomes.

Destructive Lake Andes Fire Destroys Queal Lumber Co

A Monday blaze in Lake Andes destroyed the J. I. Queal Lumber Co stock and buildings, the livery stable, and a private barn. Lumber valued at 20 000 dollars, stable and hay at 8 000 dollars. Horses buggies and harnesses in the stable were saved. If wind shifted from south the town might have been wiped out.
