Liszt Swore Off Cigars After Hazards of Duty Free
The famous pianist Franz Liszt smoked one fine Virginia cigar daily. On a trip through Chiasso a customs officer found contraband cigars in his valise, imposing a 100 dollar fine. Ricordi reclaimed the cigars in Milan, and Liszt vowed never to smoke again to avoid further humiliation. Reger recalls Liszt lighting and puffing near terra cotta figures during a 1870 visit.

Confidence in Future Shapes Generations View
The piece argues this generation is more future oriented and optimistic than past eras. It contrasts reverence for ancients with hope for unborn people and calls for relaxing restraints and old customs. A New York clergyman’s remark about life’s night giving way to humanity’s real morning is cited as illustration.
