Pioneer Days in Missouri Preachers Carried Guns to Church
A Globe Democrat account recalls early Missouri preachers who carried firearms for protection. Ministers preached in settlers cabins along with rifle-toting neighbors during meetings and on the Sabbath. Noted figures include Rev. Justinian Williams, Roy Peyton Nowlin, and Rev Thomas Kinney in Saline County. Kinney’s humor contrasted with Nowlin’s seriousness as they served in Edmonson's Creek and the Big Bottom, subsisting by subsistence farming and rifles.
