French Tanks Repel German Attack At Beuthen

French garrison in Beuthen southeastern Silesia repulsed a coordinated assault by about 8000 Germans aided by Polish insurgents. Tanks fired from buildings as German forces tried to capture French machines, while Polish fighters backed the defending troops. Casualties reported on the German side with French and insurgent losses unclear.

Federal banks set to ease rates this summer

Near Washington June 3 a general lowering of bank rates will be initiated by the Federal Reserve banks during the summer months officials announced. Treasury officials said easier money conditions are advisable for citizens as gradual improvement is expected from the event.

Local Visits Highlight Week in City

Oren Lamb of Philp visited the city along with relatives of Prof. W. C. Lamb former county superintendent. Numerous residents such as Henry Roscamp from Mitchell and Carl Kundert on trips, while others journeyed to Vermillion and Redfield. A variety of social events and family news mark a busy week with birthdays, engagements, and travel from Mitchell, Sioux City, and Scotland.

Candidacy Drive Marks 31 New Knights at Parkston

Fully 31 candidates were initiated into membership of Parkston Council No. 1772 Knights of Columbus on Sunday June 6 at the K C hall. Special services were held at Sacred Heart church with Father Dahlmanns. a large out-of-town crowd attended the afternoon ceremony and banquet. Notables from Ethan Dimock Mitchell Lake Andes Tripp Yankton Armour Wagner Geddes Platte Sioux Falls and Sioux City were present along with priests from Mitchell Platte Dimock Wagner Geddes and Wagner. Initiates include P G Frederich Frank Klaas Jos A Kleiber Anton Tischler Herbert Esser and many others. A Sioux Falls degree team and Attorney H A Doyle of Yankton spoke.

Baptists to Hold Thirteenth Convention Here

German Baptist churches of South and North Dakota plan their thirteenth annual convention in the city from Tuesday June 14 to Sunday June 19. Preparations are underway to host about two hundred ministers delegates and visitors with meeting and meal venues organized.

All ex-service men and friends urged to attend a county meeting at city hall in the afternoon to receive instructions on the six billion dollar bonus. Colonel B. Ray of Yankton will speak, with the event concluding in a dance by the American Legion.

Mrs Edward Schulz hosted a bridal shower at her Liberty Township farm for Miss Hilde Tribone who has taught at district No 40 for two winters. Friday night guests included Rosenfeld and Kulm Lutheran church youth. The gathering featured games and gifts for the honoree's upcoming plans.

Vermillion man stops ped en route home from Mitchell encampment

R Van Brunt of Vermillion was stopped on a ped in the city Friday while traveling home from the state G A R encampment at Mitchell. He was an old resident of the Miltown area and still owns property there.

Chautauqua Held Here June Twenty Four To Twenty Eight

Chautauqua in this city will begin on June 24 and last five days ending with the evening session on June 28. Committees have started work to ensure success and a ticket selling campaign will begin soon. The program includes strong numbers expected to draw a large audience and the talent is touted as the best ever presented here.

Local Club Plank Contest Ends With Picnic

Members gathered for a plank session at Jain during the day and held a light practice in the afternoon. The group enjoyed a picnic dinner before returning to town just before twilight after more games and social time.

Clinton Orchestra to Play Concert Here Saturday Night

Clinton Orchestra with 18 members and past tours to southern Michigan and eastern Nebraska will perform in this city on Saturday night July 2. Warner Pritschel acted as advance man arranging the appearance and met Rev J Lambertuy. The program will include a concert and vocal selections.

Firemen to Enter State Tournament at Mobridge

Parkston fire department members voted to participate in the state firemen tournament in Mobridge from June 14 to 17. About twenty five men plan to travel, after regular practice sessions, aiming to be in strong condition for the outing.

A group of 16 ladies and friends gathered at the G W Meisenholder house and marched in a parade to the Carl Moeller home to surprise Miss Frieda Moeller before her departure to Spearfish Normal for summer study. The event featured playful games for the youngsters and a late luncheon of candy and ice cream cones.

Rotary 1100 Members Sail to Edinburgh Convention

One thousand one hundred Rotary Club members from the United States and Canada sail on the Cameronia and Caronta to Liverpool for the twelfth annual International Association of Rotary Clubs convention in Edinburgh Scotland from June 13 to 16. Paper men accept pay cut at Quebec mills

Quebec June 3. One thousand two hundred workers at Price Bros. paper mills in Jonquieres and Kenogami ended a weeks long strike by accepting a twenty percent wage reduction and returning to work. Open shop conditions now prevail at the mills.

Irish mine kills six soldiers at Youghal range

Six soldiers were killed instantly, three mortally wounded, and about twenty injured when mines exploded under a party marching from Youghal barracks toward the rifle range. Authorities released a statement confirming the casualties and outlining the suspected attack.
