Governor appoints Wheaton and Jones to state posts

The governor named A. H. Wheaton of Brookings food and dairy commissioner and John L. Jones of Madison public examiner. The county local option bill failed in the house 50 to 32, with the Anti Saloon League seeking the initiative and referendum. A proposed county division into three counties with Murdo and Presho as seats faces farmer opposition. Brookings Agricultural Experiment Station plans expanded seed corn testing as Prof. John L. Cole warns vitality and germination are unusually low this year. He invites farmers to mail two kernels from 100 ears for free testing and reporting.

County Bridge Contract Extended One Year

In the January 4 1907 proceeding the commission extends the Iowa Bridge Co contract for another year. The Avon Clarion questions the timing and calls for bids, but notes steel price rises justify the extension at the same price. The paper defends the company and dismisses rumors as unfounded while urging voters to consider the matter.

Record enrollment hits 175 at Sioux Falls pen

Seven prisoners were received at the penitentiary in Sioux Falls last week, bringing the total to 175. It is the largest enrollment ever held there at one time as authorities prepare to staff the institution for a forthcoming twine plant operation.

Legislature Pushed on Administration Bills and Special Appropriations

The senate passed a $600,000 appropriation for a new capitol building funded mainly by state land sales. A railroad advertising provision was added to the anti-pase bill, with the measure now in conference committee. House debates include rapid sale of school lands and the Lathrop divorce bill proposing residency and open hearings with possible remarriage restrictions.
