Pierre R D Dec 18 The State Council of Defense has received word from the director of the Seid division National Cau of Defense stating that returning soldiers will be given one month's pay and a transportation allowance of 34 cents per mile from demobilization point to home town. Their railroad tickets cost 2 cents per mile by direct route. Demobilization will be from the nearest camp to a section of the majority of men in each unit.
Brookings December 14 State college suspends classes for holiday vacation from December 24 to January 2. First term was set to end December 30 but civilian students are dismissed earlier as authorities prepare for the new term.
Lieut. B. B. Markin, former Brown County and Aberdeen city attorney, writes from a French hospital about holding Grand Pre with two shock platoons for 48 hours until relief arrived. He recalls spiking fear among the LW.W. hell fire gang and notes personal losses. Influenza spread in northern South Dakota with Groton hardest hit. Aberdeen and nearby towns respond via Red Cross efforts.
Aberdeen South Dakota reports a five month old boy spent days with the police matron after his mother left him briefly with a friend who fell ill. Malted milk kept the infant content until his mother could return to Aberdeen.
