James A. Gillette of Flandreau dies in a Dell Rapids hospital at 63, the oldest SD man to volunteer for the U S military. He enlisted in Pipestone Minnesota, served in the engineering corps as a truck driver in St Louis, had intestinal surgeries, received an honorable discharge, then returned home for another operation. He leaves a widow, a daughter, and two sons in Minneapolis, pioneer Moody County resident since the 1870s, who regretted being unable to “do his bit for Uncle Sam.”
