B F Pankey of the Independent Telephone company and heirs of W H Pankey gained ownership of 81 000 acres south of Santa Fe New Mexico in the Eaton San Cristobal grant bought for 143 000 dollars. The land shows grazing value and coal indicators with several springs and irrigation sites. A New Mexican group offered 243 000 dollars for the tract, a potential profit of over the original price, though the sale is not decided.
Wilbur Glenn Voliva head of Zion City Illinois arrived in Las Vegas with Deacons Peters and Forbey to inspect mesa lands for a potential Zion community. He cited agricultural basis after Dowie era factory sale and said farming along with manufacturing and mercantile ventures could be established, aiming to replicate Zion City’s features while avoiding past mistakes.
Maxwell City records a fine rain this week while locals travel and visit. Dawson resident John Krannawitter spends Sunday here. Ora Hardesty and wife stay over weekend in Raton. Various residents plan trips, farm work continues, and A P Whiteley reacquires the livery and feed business in Dawson.
A Sunday afternoon game between Cimarron townsmen led by Crabbs and the railroad team, also from Cimarron, ended with the town victory by a score of 7 to 4. Batter details include Brooks Moor head Sullivan Town Fisher Duck worth and Asspire Mason G Chase.
A new railroad will be built and named the Albuquerque Eastern. It will run from the Duke City, pass through Tijeras Canon, and connect with the Santa Fe Central at Moriarty, about sixty miles east of Albuquerque, providing an eastern outlet and a direct link to the road network about 430 miles away.
City Marshal Howe hunted runaway wives who deserted their husbands on Monday in Raton. Mrs Davis, last seen near Trinidad, was found in a South Third street house, working as a washerwoman, and persuaded to leave with her brother. Two others were found in a North street rooming house and sent to Cimaron on the afternoon train.
Robert Prewitt of Prewitt and Prewitt, Albuquerque, returns from Taos praising abundant water and fertile crops. He notes good yields in wheat oats corn alfalfa vegetables and apples, strong sheep prices and wool, and rail hopes with the St Louis Rocky Mountain and Pacific line approaching Cimarron. He sees investment potential for farmers seeking lands in Taos and nearby areas.
Dry land farmers in New Mexico show enthusiasm for a new cane variety called the African sumach. The plant rises straight from the ground like corn and quickly reaches cultivation height, unlike sprawling grains. Its rapid vegetating growth leads to belief it may surpass other dry farm products.
Charles l ed by Governor Curry to delegate New Mexico to the fifteenth annual national irrigation congress in Sacramento California. Mr Springer chairs the territorial board of water commissioners and leads irrigation policy discussions. He is driving a large irrigation scheme in Cimarron that will open thousands of acres for farming and settlement. He is well respected, with long residence and investments in the town, and is praised by both former and current governors for his service.
John FE Codlin of Chico, veteran of four years with Gen Sherman and later conflicts with Native tribes, visited Elizabethtown to discuss pioneer days in Northern New Mexico. Born in New Jersey and resident since 1865, he helped build the area’s first house and knew L B Maxwell well. He urges others to record northern territorial history.
Dr. T Runnels of Kansas City and mining engineer F W Gibbs from Little Rock toured the Bartlett mining property between Red River and Questa. Ten claims show ore samples from 12 18 percent lead, 15 23 percent zinc, 1 24 percent copper, and 3 5 ounces of silver per ton. Gibbs called the claims the finest prospect he has seen.
The St Louis Rocky Mountain and Pacific railway known as the Swastika Route ordered a huge Navajo rug from Benham Indian Trading Co. to adorn its general offices at Ra Howard Clark, assistant manager. Clark said the rug will be the largest ever made except for the World’s Fair exhibit, with plans for Clark to visit the Navajo reservation to finalize arrangements.
Fourteen year old Alonzo Parcel, son of James and Mrs. Parcel, living on Codlin ranch near Chic, was instantly killed when a mule dragged him Sunday evening. The body was taken to Johnson & Fry for burial preparations. Funeral services led by Rev A Cutler at Johnson & Veye rooms were well attended. interment at Fairmont cemetery.
The Swastika route spanning St. Louis to the Rocky Mountain and Pacific coast has been receiving a large shipment of gondola cars from St Louis Car Co. The cars are moved free over connecting lines via Texas and Pacific and Southwestern, loaded with coal and ties for Southwestern points. The Mexican Central’s similar plan prompted Swastika to follow, saving freight on empties and easing car shortages. Coal, coke, and ties are being shipped in from St Louis for the Rocky Mountain road.
The Mitchell valve gear tested on Santa Fe engine 1219 in the New Mexico division is declared a success. A set from Albuquerque shops will be installed, with President Mitchell supervising trips between Albuquerque and Las Vegas. The new valves promise reduced fuel consumption and improve on the first experimental design.
Negotiations complete for sale of the Exchange hotel property at the Plaza corner Santa Fe. T. Z. Winter of Winter Grocery becomes new landlord. The hotel once marked the western terminus of the Santa Fe trail and thrived in the wagon train era.
An inquirer writes to a local real estate dealer, asserting that a town’s character and merchant activity are evident from its newspaper. He warns he won’t locate near a town that neglects its paper, citing past experience with a similar town. He emphasizes news and local commerce as decisive factors.
