Yesterday around 1 oclock a blaze erupted at the Old Fellows Block drawing a large crowd. Firemen fought flames pouring from a cracked doorway and smoke filled the store room, with damage spreading through the building before containment.
A roof and ceiling collapse caused water to pour in and check the flames. The hall suffered considerable damage to furniture and fixtures while Morey & Winfield below were drenched but their stock of Maur feed and seeds dampened. Knapp, with office in the adjoining building, moved stock and fixtures to stay safe. Causes cited include defective plumbing and carelessness leaving a fire in the stove.
Kansas City business men on a return trip from Texas and Oklahoma called on Chanute last Saturday. Preparations had been made for speeches, but the visitors preferred a half hour to visit local merchants. A large crowd gathered on the platform to greet them and the group hurriedly boarded the train as the whistle blew. The Chanute representatives expressed regret at the short visit and planned for future hospitality.
