Asa Harding and Mabel Thornton miss days due to illness. Geo Clapson faced blizzard homeward. Seanna show drew attendees. many weddings predicted. W. Cook shipped fur to New York City. praised as a leading traynee and farmer. About twenty couples surprised Sion Wheeler for his 26th birthday. Spelling school praised. Trammell champion speller. The January 30 meeting authorized a warrant for 83.90 for an insurance policy on the poor farm and approved leasing the county poor ore to Erie Gas and Mineral Co for gas or mineral prospecting. The bond of T. M. Mock as keeper of the poor farm was approved. Leases and contracts on the Isett levee were let to listed landowners and bidders, with remaining work awarded to H. J. Duvall as the lowest responsible bidder. Probate Court saw filings on unknown wills and estates, with petitions to probate and inventories approved, and heirs named for various estates. Marriage licenses issued include Q. Seary in Chanute.
Eljis reports four severe remarks about frequenting billiards and notes a third entertainment tonight. Admission ten cents. Teachers anticipate good recitations. Basement and Middles programs kept secret, Middles to present an excellent show. School choir to provide music under direction of leader.
Ed Micheal is very ill. Miss Livvie Davis traveled to Chanute last Monday for a two week absence. Sam Givens returned from Kansas City after a two week visit. Gas well diggers report valuable finds beyond gas. Mrs Geo Denny and others visited Mrs Frank Pruity last week. The band will entertain at the M E church next Saturday evening. Miss Alice Maxwell has returned from work at a Kansas City book bindery. Mr and Mrs Wm Riley spent Friday with James Riley’s family. good time reported. Mrs Mattie Maxwell will be appointed ticket agent at Rest and will start when the Auditor opens the office. Wm Cauble dismissed school last Friday due to illness. hopes to resume teaching soon. A A Rowen remembered for his cold blast last Tuesday. locals hope for milder days next summer.
J. W. Arthurs lost a colt by distemper last week. J. E. Plummer is the champion rabbit hunter of this section. W. H. Neyhard is laying off from garden work. John Kubner sold his farm, forcing D. D. McCormick to seek another place. J. H. Mahaffey to move to the old Royster farm in March, renting the Hammond pasture. The farm of G. McQuilly has been sold to an Iowa man who will occupy it by March first.
Nightly conversions reach thirty five with seventeen uniting the church and eleven baptized last Monday. Rev John Lane the singing preacher has preached and sung at all services. Lane closes next Tuesday with an illustrated exhibition Darkest New York featuring eighty stereoptical pictures. Local talent assists. admission 15 and 25 cents.
George W. Wiatt of South Gardiner Maine praises Chamberlain’s Cough Comedy as the only remedy that cured his cough cold chills and grip after trying many useless sells. He bought a 50 cent bottle and reports full relief and congratulates the manufacturers of an honest medicine. For sale by all druggists.
The market shows producers asking 125 while buyers linger around 100. Factories report ample current supply and expect future demand to support prices, with no solid basis for a price drop despite circulating rumors.
Died at Shaw January 27 1899 Martha Eckley aged 71 years 5 days after long illness. She was a Methodist for 40 years and awaited the summons home. The remains rest in Shaw cemetery with funeral by Rev Saunders at the Christian church. She leaves a son four daughters grandchildren and many friends.
