Final Girard Smelter Location Near Chanute
Final arrangements place the Girard Smelter at Mertz land north of town near the refinery site to be built in spring. The county will grant gas rights with no money exchanged. The smelter will start employing 75 to 100 workers and expand to double capacity. A new Arkansas Missouri and Kansas railroad proposal would cross the county southeast to Chanute, linking Saint Paul Erie Shaw Chanute and Memphis, opening regional mineral and timber trade.
