J. H. Bracken of Lake Arthur reports a major oil find on Four Mile above Hopkins dam eight miles northwest of Lakewood. A Lake Arthur group led by J. C. Grant drilled a well about fifty feet east of Swingle’s artesian well and struck oil at 475 feet after artesian water reached 400 feet. No casing was used after the oil discovery.
Knowles notes a quiet Christmas with few decorations and several social gatherings. Residents plan a railroad branch from Stanton to Roswell, prep land for spring planting, and expect cotton to be grown with a possible gin if yields are good. The Pecos Water Users Association will hold its annual election on January 21, 1908, at the association office in Carlabad New Mexico. Voters will elect three directors for three year terms in Otis Florence and Malaga districts to replace A M Howe R Wells Benson and Willis Cadwell whose terms expire February 1 1908. Polls open 10 a m close 3 p m.
A. E. Siglner advertises pasture space for horses with abundant grass water and shelter at a ranch at the head of Hackberry Draw.
A Roswell note from Santa Fe says Attorney General James Hervey and family are ill and staying at the territorial capitol sanitarium. Reverend Vincent Trost concludes a Roswell Catholic mission, plans Carlsbad next. Roswell editors discuss a potential sensational report and a push for a strict prohibition campaign with clean elections. Pearl Wilson and wife visit from Carlsbad. Haynes couple pass through en route to Tucumcari seeking new home.
