Cold Night Ride Through Birdtail Divide With a Tenderfoot
Charlie Higgenbotham recalls December 2, 1879 as the coldest night on the Fort Benton to Helena stage line. A plane tuner, chilled near freezing, endured hours of blowing wind and sleet while six horses pulled the coach to Dearborn. In Mike Goldby’s Dearborn saloon the passenger was revived with hot drinks and rough hospitality before continuing toward Silver City and Helena, never a tenderfoot again.
