Death Valley civilization theory shocks early 1900s readers

A Cambridge Egyptologist, Charles Glastonbury, reports after a two month study in Death Valley that the region once housed a highly advanced prehistoric civilization. He cites an ancient dam near Wingate Pass, Nile-like inscriptions, and suggests the valley predated known cultures by thousands of years. A Bullfrog Miner note contextualizes the claim as speculative.

Mineral riches lure prospectors to river hills

The hills along the river swarm with mineral potential and multiple claims. Gold, silver, copper, lead and iron are reported, with assay hints from $2 to $75 and legends of old values up to $1700. L. B Moody, a seasoned prospector, predicts a thriving mining camp as transport improves. A Canyon canal group, led by J. H. Forbes and “Shorty” Smith, has opened a 60 foot tunnel with four mineral walls. Marlotte is exposing a $20 grass-roots ledge, and Moody’s adjacent claim promises more. New wagon roads could unlock substantial activity in the North Fork mineral region.
