T taxpayers elect entire ticket with one exception

Election day in Caldwell passed much like other years with light morning voting and improving afternoon. Ward three saw tight race for defeated candidate Cupp and Gipson winning by nine votes. Gowen chosen mayor by 84 margin. Council picks set. Gowen defers appointments until council consulted. Also notes a clock guessing contest at Fair store with Gowen winner and minor prizes.

Look Into the Water Works From Tribune

Hazlewood Creamery near completion at Caldwell plant

The Hazlewood Creamery building is nearly finished. The first 26 by 60 foot door will house machinery while the second story will hold offices. Built with the ice plant, it ensures cold air for butter storage. L. R. Clough to reside there as manager. The firm will soon manufacture butter and ice cream, with cream already shipped to Spokane. Caldwell Cold Storage plans 1500 egg crates, aiding local market expansion alongside the new flouring mill and elevator.

City Pays Its Hoboes in Admonitory Meeting

City council adjourned meeting with four members and the mayor present approved minutes and officer reports. Bridges accepted and bonds released. A $5.00 bill to the chief for hoboes who worked streets was paid. A building permit for a sheet iron structure near the city hall sparked doubt and no minutes record. Also noted: mining property offer of $25,000 for Thomas Sterling, Payette jail transport costs, and A L Murphy Real Estate adding a car for viewings.

Caldwell Elects J B Gowen Mayor In Caldwell

J B Gowen born in 1866 Farbault Minnesota moved to Nebraska in 1881 and Caldwell in 1898. He worked for Pacific Express and as western rep for a major live stock firm in Omaha. Gowen has long led Caldwell ventures and is praised for liberality and city interests. The Tribune predicts prudent city expenditures under his mayoralty.

Caldwell to Build 200 Barrel Flour Mill and Elevator

Caldwell will gain a 200 barrel flour mill and a 100000 bushel elevator with foundation work underway. Denver based Colorado Mill and Elevator Co will run the plant, tying Caldwell to a western network with mills in Kansas and Nebraska. Capital of sixty thousand dollars funds the Caldwell project, promising modern milling equipment and strong grain handling capacity.

Hill Wins In The Oration Contest At College Of Idaho

Clarence Hill won the second annual oratorical contest held by the Academic department at the College of Idaho. The event featured speakers including Edgar Oakes, R H Davis, William Oakes, Edwin Newman, Volney Carringer, James Boone, Robert McCormick, and George Runciman. Hill received $10 in gold and will represent the college in the state interscholastic contest in Pocatello on April 30. The Girls' Glee Club provided music. Hill lives on the Roswell bench where his father owns a ranch.

Great Walker Edwards Pass Caldwell on North American Walk

Mr and Mrs BE C Edwards continued their walking journey from Portland Oregon toward Portland Maine traveling by foot since February 24. They stopped ten days visiting Pendleton and Baker City due to Mrs Edwards illness. The pair record each post office stop with the postmasters stamp to allow Martin and Co of Portland to trace their route. They expect to reach Portland Maine by December 1 and plan to publish a letters series funded by the firm.

Attorney General to Sue 112 Corporations for Delinquent Taxes

Attorney General McDougall and assistants prepare to bring suit against 112 domestic corporations to collect delinquent taxes. The total amount is expected to reach about $5000 though exact figures are to be announced later by the official.

McNish Buys White Pine Timber Holdings

John McNish purchased the White Pine Company timber holdings on the South Fork including both standing and cut timber estimated at about 3 million feet. His Garden valley logs bring his spring drive to 6 million feet. The White Pine mill in Nampa may be abandoned for now.

Mass meeting at College of Idaho on April 12 1909

Caldwell students convene in Assembly Hall under the Associated Student Body to discuss student effort aiding Dr Boone and partners work. A plan of action will be presented as they unite for the college’s survival amid ongoing efforts. Also a matron’s declamation contest at the Presbyterian church Tuesday evening features a silver medal prize for Y M C A and W C T U work. Admission 10 and 16 cents.
