A August 27 1923 letter from Flaxton North Dakota pleads for presidential aid to struggling farmers. The author cites government unfairness to labor, laments farm hardships, and asks Harding to witness the plains plight and oppose bankers and industrial power.
Valley City North Dakota September 14. Sheriff and searchers probed the area for highwaymen who assaulted P O Day of Ecker Prairie while he stopped to help a distressed vehicle. Day recalled two men from a dilapidated car and later identified partial descriptions. He was bruised but not seriously hurt, and authorities continued to hunt for the assailants and their vehicle.
A list of weekly arrests including John L Wagner fined 25 for being in a public place and released. KR Grome jailed for intoxication plea not guilty with hearing set. Tnosday fore on Grams Bailey fined 21 50. Roy Breen 14 arrested for supplying liquor to a minor with trial and sentence. Loveland arrested for possessing intoxicating liquor and bond set at 1600. hearings continued.

J J Cahill will appeal after District Judge Coffey ruled Cahill forfeited his seat on the state board of administration. Cahill said he would not seek a stay or block R B Murphy from duties pending appeal. Judge H L Barry vacated the order restraining Murphy, clearing the record and leaving Murphy to influence board actions, effective Sept 5 when served.
Carrington North Dakota September 13 town marshal J Schutt is in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen by William Jones colored while transporting Jones and Clarence Wright to the city jail They were detained with three other colored men and a white man after being seen loitering local officials held them without charge pending Schutt recovery The two attempted to break away during escort to the jail leading to the shooting Rest of the groups left town following the incident.
North Dakota counties owe the state and a third of a million dollars on 1920 taxes. Melntosh county leads nonpayment with $137.18, while Trails county and others range from $1,000 to $17,906.95. For 1921 taxes, $2,072,811.14 has been paid. $2,688,074.64 expected to be collected. Deputy Medhand says about a quarter of a million remains delinquent, with more due in the first payment. Nine counties have paid more than half of 1921 taxes, including Melntosh. A property sale near Coteau is noted.
Eight people were admitted to citizenship in a Monday hearing at the court rooms in Williston conducted by District Judge George H. Moehring with examiner Robert A. Carlson. One case was continued. Names listed include Carl Brother, John K. Hagen, Anton Matt Olson, Alfred Peterson, Harry Hilton, Charles Alfred Peterson, Karl Martinson, and Joseph Maurer.
The Republican State Central Committee at Bismarck last week ousted weaker allies and endorsed a strict party platform. They proposed William Lemke as independent candidate for governor, Bert Baker for agriculture and law, and BE Stikler for attorney general, with 27 members attending and R W Frazier elected chairman. The drive emphasizes unity to defeat factions and secure a loyal state ticket.
Milwaukee September 11 Senator La Follette widens his lead in the Wisconsin Republican senatorial race with returns from 2,218 of 2,523 precincts. Blaine holds a large lead for governor as others lag, while Bowbells Public School District No. 14 votes to open Monday September 18 with a full program, high school courses, and registrar details for students and staff.
Mrs. Axel Johnson 23 died after an auto crash night before on the road from Twelfth Street N. Chas. R. Carlson 1124 Fourth St. and Mrs. George L. Loftus were briefly in hospital with injuries. Carlson is jailed as witnesses say speeding and possible alcohol connected to the crash.
In Fargo on September 12 H A Arnold of Minneapolis and H B Puller Fargo office of the North Dakota potato federation discussed a proposed railroad regulation. The rule would require prepayment for all potato shipments except United States jerede No.1, affecting North Dakota crop handling plans and stressing prepaid freight in the upcoming season.
Washburn North Dakota September 12 A new threshing outfit run by well known workers caused a stir as the engine laid up big bars in Burdlie. The report notes the machine and operator in the local scene with emphasis on disruption and activity.
