Bowbells Baseball Association officers plan a Halloween night event at the opera house with the Bowbells orchestra, extra pieces, a floor committee, special supper at City Bakery, and ample entertainment. Proceeds fund next summer's ball games and the treasury.
Washburn North Carolina October 22 district court will convene here to hear the perjury case against Ludwig Peterson. Peterson is charged with false testimony in the Anderson murder trial from June. He posted a $5 000 bond and has since left town after selling his pool hall business. He recently returned and is seeking to have the case dropped.
Minnewank an North Dakota October 22 Judge C J Butte said bootlegging is as dangerous as horse stealing in sentencing D M Jones after a guilty plea. Jones was arrested at Fill More and received ten months in the state penitentiary for supplying liquor to threshing crews, the judge warning enforcement of liquor laws remains strict.
Cc CL Jenney, a former Bowbells resident who spent the summer grading the Ambrose railroad extension for the Soo, was in the city several days this week, greeting friends and noting he has kept out of married life. He plans to spend the winter in Minnesota lumber camps.
In St Paul, the supreme court upheld a $16,000 verdict for Julius Kioppenberg of Mankinson against Sparialway after a rail car accident while transporting live poultry to Chicago. Kioppenberg, a caretaker aboard the car, was thrown to the floor and permanently injured. he claimed the company owed the same duty as ordinary passengers. Klonpwalters has since died, and his wife was substituted as plaintiff.
Max N Oct 22 thieves stole twenty five thousand dollars in notes from the August Zebram store safe, with little cash taken. The burglars also robbed the B B Whiting store of a small amount. The stolen notes comprised much of Zebram’s business for the season, and officials have sought suspects with no success.
Minnesota railroads will impose on November 1 a two cent rate for interstate traffic with North Dakota, aligning with Minnesota's interstate rate upheld by the U S Supreme Court last June. Final readjustments have been filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission by Northern Pacific, Great Northern, and Minneapolis St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie officials, with further state adjustments planned promptly.
The season opens with a pro bout at Bowbells Opera House on Saturday. Robert Olson of Minneapolis, about 180 pounds, challenges local standout Stefon Stefanowicz who has never been thrown by men of similar weight. Stefanowicz, praised for skill and strength, will meet Olson in a bout that local fans are urged to attend.
The Sav ings Deposit bank in Minot owned by area Youmans was closed by State Bank Examiner Sverre G Severtson due to about 35000 in mortgages he deemed unsatisfactory. The bank had roughly 50000 in deposits and 12000 cash. assets included a Main street building and 2500 in fixtures. Efforts to find a buyer failed as the examiner insisted replacements by cash for 45000 in mortgages, threatening the bank’s survival.
Dickinson October 23 A cattle thief Mike Schmeiski leaped a window and fled across the prairie pursued by Sheriff Barrett and Sheriff Brown. Twelve shots felled him with minor injuries. Henry Peterson aged 17 of White Bear Minn was arrested for driving stolen cattle. Barrett tracked the thief over 100 miles. Schmeiski had recent parole from Bowman Morton county offenses. Jas Horst and other locals visited the county seat on Saturday.
A special Grand Trunk Pacific train linked Regina Saskatchewan with Minneapolis Minnesota marking the first crossing into the United States under the new line. The party included Lieutenant Governor Grown and Regina officials plus about seventy five business leaders as they toured a rich wheat region and evidence of cross border railway cooperation.
In Minot North Dakota on October 4 recall voters ousted the socialist slate led by Dorman and backed by candidate Wilson. Davis LeSener Shaw Eisele and Lynch won their races as anti socialist fusion carried the day with about 1 200 votes cast and wards three and six delivering decisive majorities. Farmers arrived by carload to plant trees funded by a summer sales push totaling several thousand dollars.
Fessenden North Dakota October 2 Adam Lesmeister renowned wolf hunter explains bounty profits from catching wolves. He uses wolf hounds to track them and retrieves pelts for sale. This year he has captured 225 wolves mostly gre, with bounty exceeding 800 dollars. He expects to increase the total before holidays. Returning from Fargo he shares an interview.
Peter Kiser confined in the Toca jail and awaiting transfer to Bismarck for a one year sentence on forgery escaped by digging through cement and plaster to reach the outside. He previously carried out holes in the wall to drop to the ground using a blanket as a rope, injuring himself in the process as deputies search for him.
Sherwood North Dakota October 22 The verdict by concerned citizens labels the thief the meanest kind. A party stole 12 gallons of gasoline from the fire engine, emptying the tank after a recent call. The engine could not be used when needed, and the theft is attributed to the prior refill cycle.
Thos. Judge of Hastings Minnesota spent a week in this vicinity seeking investments. He stayed with his cousin Pat Wevaney west of town before leaving Saturday night for Northern Minnesota to inspect properties. Judge has several thousand dollars to invest and his brothers also have money for real estate deals. He was impressed with Bow Bells country and may return in spring.
President A. Wiper returned from Minnesota after a buying trip and reported high potato land values in the Burke county area. He noted yields around 200 bushels per acre, costs of about 25 cents per bushel to grow, and profits above that. Wiper arranged potential dairy cattle purchases and warned farmers against shipping in outside hogs due to cholera risks.
In Bismarck North Dakota on October 22 police seek the parties behind a kangaroo court that fined James Saunders fifteen dollars for drunkenness. Saunders had arrived from Mandan, drank with acquaintances, then was taken to a fake police chief and a fake magistrate who fined him based on cash he carried. He later met the real chief but could not locate the kangaroo court or the building involved.
