A sea battle tale recalls a brush with a Chinese pirate junk in the Eastern waters. The Oneco, armed with four guns per broadside and boarding pikes, fired a broadside that disabled the grappling line, forcing the pirate ship to fall back about 200 feet astern as the crew fought to sever the hooked line and prevent boarding.
A historical portrait of Broadway nightlife describes grand hotel barrooms fading as boudoir buffets rise. It notes the St Nicholas, New York, Metropolitan, and other famed venues lose status, with barkeeprs displaced by waiters and in some cases higher tips.
