Crosby North Dakota reports Sigvald L Hall formerly of the city was arrested by military authorities in Tacoma Washington for failure to register under the May 12 1917 act. The case against Sten Swanson for failing to register was dismissed after local officials discussed it with the attorney general.
The northern division of the Red Cross issued seven rules to ensure delivery of gifts to soldiers in France by Christmas. Parcel post is advised. mail by November 10. pack parcels to resist pressure. write clear addresses with name and unit followed by American Expeditionary Forces. include sender’s name in the upper left corner. mark Christmas mail and avoid adding outside stickers. postage prepaid at 12 cents per pound with a seven pound limit.
John K. Samek, 34, a Russian immigrant resident on a farm 22 miles north of Dickinson, died by self inflicted gunshot. He used a string tied to the trigger looped to his toe to fire the single barrel shotgun, the shot entering above the heart. His brother found him about six, coffin burial followed.
In Minot North Dakota the district court posted a sharp October spike with eighteen divorce filings. Causes include desertion and incompatibility as cited by petitioners seeking dissolution of marriage.
In Alexander N D on November 8 a coroner ruled both men fired on each other at the Phillips ranch Saturday night. A confrontation on a ranch left Douglas mortally wounded by a shotgun blast after forcing his order. He returned armed with a 30 caliber rifle, attempting to shoot the Philipses, but both fired first. Douglas died instantly from the shotgun blast, while Philips died about thirty minutes later. The two men were locals near the Squaw Gap community. Douglas had donated land for a cemetery there about a year earlier and will be buried in the same plat. The Douglas funeral occurred today and Allen was buried yesterday at Sidney.
