Harriman’s Titan Land Grab Targets Midwest Investors
New York March 10 An aggressive scheme by E H Harriman over a vast timber land grant in Oregon draws government probes for possible law evasion. The 1866 grant to the Oregon and California railroad enforced a 160 acre limit and $2.60 per acre price, yet patents show no such restrictions. Purchasers, often unaware of the amendment, faced sales to timber experts as Harriman gained control via Southern Pacific, prompting a congressional inquiry into legality and impact across Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa the Dakotas Montana and Idaho.
