Washington Feb 21 A bill by Senator McCumber North Dakota to fix the 1918 wheat price at not less than 2.76 per bushel was sent to the agriculture committee. He argued rising material and labor costs require higher farmer profits and boosted production.
Minot North Dakota Feb 21 Bob Clements a Mountratt county young man was placed under arrest and held to district court at Stanley charged with stealing horses. He has not yet posted bail. Fred Hannah the step father says eleven head of horses were missing seven of them located. Two horses were allegedly sold to farmers south of Rosas and another horse owned by Mrs Nick Comford was taken for riding nearby Sanish. The youth has a reputation for avoiding hard work and trouble follows his preferred path.
A fire originated in a vacant hall above McDonald pool hall and tore through five buildings in Conway including the Wertz hotel, post office telephone exchange, and two shops. Property loss is estimated at 40 to 50 thousand dollars. Wertz, owner of the hotel, suffered severe burns to his hands.
Benedict North Dakota February 21 Aler Hanchanko loaded a car of grain at Minneaplis elevator where a stick of dynamite was found on arrival. He cannot account for the explosive sighting and suspicion points to an accidental fall from a farmer's granary beam or ignorant delivery to the elevator.
The Tribune prints a letter from Tow Loons formerly of North Sta township now at Pensacola Florida. He explains enlisting recently and being stationed with Company 36 quarters in a bungalow. He praises the local YMCA for paper and movies and describes his clothing supply and camp life in detail.
A correspondent notes schedule for muster at eight and lights out at ten, mentions receiving ten thousand dollars in government insurance, and promises pay rise to forty six dollars and sixty cents with foreign service bonus. Describes hydroplane repair duties, coast targets near Ireland or England, study of wireless and air gunnery, and daily rations plus ice cream.
North Dakota, Feb 21. State Engineer Jay W. Biles says the lignite industry is advancing rapidly due to war conditions. He notes thousands burned lignite this year, with demand rising. lignite is nearly as valuable as water power and could fuel manufacturing centers. He urges patriotic use, saying every ton saved coal for factories, steamships, railroads, and overseas use, while North Dakota holds vast lignite deposits. The office reports rising mining and a biennial mine inspection.
In the Northgate Special School District No 31 a special election on Monday unanimously approved a 4000 bond to buy a site and build a two room frame school with basement. Directors will decide start date and building size soon with bids likely before warm weather to begin after frost ends.
A Rowbells branch Red Cross dance last evening drew many attendees with the Rowbelle Coteau orchestra providing music. Ladies from the Red Cross served supper and cashier J G Johnson of the First State Bank helped sell about 40 tickets, signaling strong city interest in the event.
William Glenn, son of Mrs. F. J. Glenn, returned from Camp Dodge on a ten day furlough praising army life after six months in the National Army. He recovered from a mumpe illness, and extols daily drill, study, and improving physical condition while noting officers are well liked and most recruits soon adapt and desire front experiences.
Notices mailed to remaining men in the first draft class require physical examinations starting Saturday. Thirty men will be examined daily until all are processed, with about 180 still to go, and the work will take roughly a week to complete under new regulations.
Adolph Fas mussen sale held Tuesday drew a good turnout though frigid air. J Koprive managed proceedings from start to finish keeping the auction moving as bidders eyed each item. The event, though brisk, concluded to the full satisfaction of Mr Ras musse n.
Walcott North Dakota February 21 Iver Wold living near here carried a small piece of wood into his eye six weeks ago thinking a torn eye muscle. A local doctor removed the stick driven under the eyeball and also found an oat kernel in the eye.
The Grand Forks Commercial Club sought guidance in St Paul on a Langdon line change. Officials say no such change is contemplated and warn that railroad schedules are unpredictable for the near future.
T O Hunter, age 80, writes from Long Beach California with Mrs Hunter. He notes sending funds to tobacco relief, reports Horace H Hunter in France with pneumonia but improving, and shares letters from Bowbells friends. The letter describes winter in California, visits to San Diego Los Angeles and Long Beach, and Horace's address for correspondence.
Washington February twenty one a bill to exempt farmers from the draft would grant deferred classification to farm laborers. Those affected would need two years of steady farm work before the law takes effect as introduced in the house by Representative Flood chairman of the foreign affairs committee.
The county board on Tuesday placed an order for 5400 bushels of choice seed oats at 97 percent germination and 1200 bushels of six rowed barley seed. The order goes to Wy Werberton of Minneapolis, noted for high grade cleaned seed and recommended by the State Department of Agriculture.
The county board plans to supply grain for farmers using 10000 bushels of No 3 white oats from Quinn Shepardson Co of Minneapolis. The oats are for feed not seed and cost less than No 1 seed oats. They aim to lock in price before shortages rise, with potential further orders at next week’s meeting.
Sister Smith and Brother Jones testified at a revival meeting confessing long histories of sin and saying their place is behind the door in a dark corner as they seek humility and repentance.
The lodge of the Modern Woodmen of America will hold a private dance at Fraternity hall on Thursday evening February 28. All lodge members and their wives and Royal Neighbors lodge members and their husbands are invited. Each member may bring a friend. Music will be provided and a pleasant time anticipated.
The Burke County Board accepted a contract for an agricultural agent to be sent to Bowhells starting March 1. The agricultural college will fund salary and expenses until July 1, after which county funds will be appropriated. The Tribune urges farmers to seek expert advice and support for the agent’s work to improve county conditions.
An appeal requests all Red Crown article contributors to deliver material to headquarters by Wednesday February 37 to accompany the sext shipment, signaling an improbable deadline and potential disruption to plans.
An 11 year old boy, son of Lila Pogrebnek, became insane after witnessing his father in a quarrel with a neighbor and living in fear since. He ran away but was brought back, and after a neighbor visit his fear worsened into insanity.
Mrs D J Coons and daughters visited the Wal ter Spiese home last Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Henry Brown spent Friday with the R J Wilson family. Stanley Coons and Rodney shopped in Northgate Friday. Roale Lynch visited Henry’s Thursday. Mrs R J Wilson spent Wednesday with Mrs W B Coons. The Lynch family called at Beckie Coons Friday evening. W B Coons and R J Wilson sold a team each to Jim Uglum last Tuesday. Various residents visited homes through the week including Joy Hamiston, Mattie Burke, D M Skinner, Mary Coons Ruth Coons George Coons Estella Coons, Rev Gilchrist, Mary Bair Roy Wilson and the Wilsons. Supper at Stanley Coons Saturday. The Jim Burke family from near Northgate spent Saturday with W B Coons. A group including Helen Spiese Bruce Bair Beckie Coons spent Saturday at Stanley Coons. Mrs Theodore White visited her sister Mrs John Romine last Tuesday. Maria Peterson returned to school after a week at home. Mrs Gunt Swenson spent Monday at D M Skinner’s. Mrs Joe Homiston and children called on Mrs Ed Hamilton. Mrs Homiston had gripe last week. Helen Spiese stayed Wednesday to Monday with Violet. Mr and Mrs Walter Spiese dined with Mrs Dr J Coona Monday. Some neighbors enjoyed skating Monday evening. George Coons was at county seat Monday. Cor. C
In Burk County North Dakota on February 2 a case titled Watford City vs George Higging opened before Justice Gullickson. Higging faces district court trial next term. Bail set at 1000 dollars, Higging arrested on train with whiskey. The grip and prisoner were turned over to Deputy Casey. whiskey grip later disappeared in town. County commissioners plan Thursday meeting to arrange seed and feed aid for needy farmers, awaiting survey cards to estimate totals and bonding needs.
