A 16 year old brother of Sheriff S A Smith in Germany near the Danish border declines to serve in the German army. He informs the draft board he has a brother in the U S Army and fears shooting or being shot. He escapes into Copenhagen as officers debate action. He notes food shortages with milk rationed to a quart daily, pork limited, bread with no butter, and leather shoes taken for soldiers.
The Gulf St Louis and Vancouver Railway Co a Wilmington Delaware firm plans a standard gauge line from Leola North Dakota south through Henville Ward McLean Burleigh Emmons and Logan to South Dakota then to Leola Saskatchewan connecting with Grand Trunk Pacific seeks sanction to sell stock in North Dakota and to begin with one million paid in capital. The company also seeks authority to form the St Louis Canadian Improvement Co for stock sales. Preliminary surveys were nearly finished last summer though blue sky action was not yet completed.
Farmers seek seed for 1918 sowing but seed lab cannot meet demand as farmers delay sending samples. H L Bolley says if reports were published earlier thousands of bushels could have been sold. Citizens urged to bring corn ears for testing to improve next year’s supply.
Professor Bolley explains germination and how to keep seeds dry and unfrozen. Farmers may sell seed with a right to list names for buyers, and seed germination for sale is set at 60 percent for planting purposes. Farmers wishing to enter seed corn in the annual contest should send ears representing their variety and will receive them back under association rules.
James Coffey of Aberdeen announces that an income tax officer will arrive in Bowbells Wednesday morning January 2 to assist residents with making 1927 income tax returns. Returns must be filed by January 15. penalties for noncompliance include fines up to $1,000 or jail. The officer will be at the courthouse during business hours to help free of charge.
Government life insurance is available to all active duty or reserve personnel including officers in training camps. Costs range from sixty five cents to one dollar twenty seven cents per month per thousand dollars, depending on age. Beneficiaries include spouses children grandchildren and other close relatives. General Pershing and thousands of soldiers already hold policies, totaling over one billion dollars in issued insurance.
The event on Saturday evening December 29 at Coteau hall features the Bowbells Coteau orchestra ready to play lively two steps. Supper will be served and all are invited to come in best or worst attire, aiming for a fun, ridiculous look.

Herbert Hoover leads the Commission for Relief in Belgium in directing drafted Army personnel to donate civilian clothes for the war effort. Secretary Baker approves, cantonment officers to receive Hoover’s representatives who will collect garments and ship 400 tons across the Dutch frontier to aid Belgians facing a hard coming winter.
Bowbells volunteers plan a grand firemen ball at the Hoya Theatre on Monday evening December 31. Committees will handle arrangements and advertising next week. Proceeds will go to the local Red Cross as participants from nearby towns join a yearly standout event.
Mrs. William Moran and staff member John returned to their Flor, North Dakota home last Monday after staying with Mrs. Kim at the Hoff residence for two weeks. Also visiting were Mrs. Tom Robertson and her daughter, Mrs. J. Wilson.

Chief Clerk C A Masters sent questionnaires to all men with order numbers 1 through 266 except those at training camp. Mailout began with 5 percent on Saturday and continues five percent daily except Sundays and holidays. Attorneys countywide offer free help. H A Hanson and Dougherty of Powers Lake are prominent figures assisting registrants.
Mrs. Bierly of Velva was accidentally shot by her son Russell while removing shells from a .22 gopher rifle at the Bierly home in Velva North Dakota. The bullet perforated the bowels, the mother was taken to Minot hospital for treatment, and the family notes she is a woman of charity who led the Red Cross chapter and directed its work as she faced a grave wound.
Minot readers report the discovery of Clark Hovey's clothing two miles east of Mandan on the Missouri river bank. An overcoat and suit with a deputy sheriff badge and wife’s photo were found. pockets contained money. Hovey, missing six weeks, had been seen in town after vanishing and left clues that suggested financial trouble.
Fargo, N. D. Dec. 20. Taxidermist L. C. Backer narrowly escaped injury while attempting to kill and mount a four foot alligator he had held in captivity. As he worked with the throat, the alligator bit down on a board and crushed it, forcing Backer to withdraw his hand to save his fingers.
An old magazine ad promotes magazines as perfect Christmas gifts for every family member. It lists A. Jensau as contact with a phone line and emphasizes affordability.
The Catholic people of America are urged to donate to the YMCA fund while also supporting the Knights of Columbus war camp drive. The Bowbella Minor Council seeks 5,000 dollars to reach “over the top” with J. H. Mohr soliciting KC funds in Bowbella. Both charities are urged to unite efforts at home and abroad.
George Morgan a black man was arrested for stealing wheat from Mrs Orr’s farm in Poothills township. Bond set at 1500 he awaits district court after waiving examination. Deputy Ed Drinkwater made the arrest in his home south of Larson. Another Black man, Wm Warren, released after preliminary hearing.
Wm Clavy of Valley City visiting official reports inadequate fire protection. City waterworks lacked water and chemical engines were not ready for immediate use. Olson notes low incendiary fire losses since the war began, with few crimes caught.
Edward Cohen resigned from the States Attorney H. A. Hanson’s office after six months as assistant. Gust Albertson, a farm owner with gas tractors and horses, visited in the city for Christmas purchases driving a Ford. He boasted about cases showing smaller cars beating high powered Racine and spoke of a six week trip to Minneapolis with plans for another in December.
