Two Men Lynched by Masked Mob in Lexington Missouri
A mob stormed the county jail at Lexington on August 13 and hanged Charles Salyers and Harry Gates after seizing them from the jail. Salyers claimed Gates fired the fatal shot that killed George W. Johnson, a wealthy farmer. The mob, armed and masked, broke through the outer door, cut steel cells, and transported the men half a mile to a tree where they were executed. One shot fired only to extinguish a light. Salyers, known locally as a resident with a troubled reputation, left a family behind. Gates, aged thirty, had previously served a penitentiary term for burglary.
