President Taft signed the three year homestead bill allowing entrymen to prove claims in three years with five months absence permitted annually and reduced large-claim acreage from eighty to forty. Senator Borah backed the measure as it passed Congress.
Locals on Thursday evening witnessed one of the grandest sunsets over Blackfoot as electrical showers faded. The sky spilled gold across Grove City trees and homes, painting amazing hues that rival poetry and the famed Idaho line about golden sunsets.

Richard Lee fourteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Lee was killed on Memorial day by an accidental revolver discharge. Funeral services at the Episcopal church with Rev George officiating. The cortege to the cemetery followed, and out of town attendees included Robert C Lee ensign on the battleship Delaware and Mrs Seaton of Los Angeles. Also notes a meeting night change for Pioneer Camp Modern Woodmen of America, to Tuesday June 18.
Washington reports the Interstate Commerce Commission suspended proposed new excess baggage rates by nearly all U S railroads effective July 1 for 120 days while investigations proceed. Also noted is Mrs Tinnie Wozniak from Soldier sent to Blackfoot asylum after childbirth. her husband T N Wozniak accompanied her. Dr E W Kleinman testified in probate court.
Jennie McDonough, longtime cook at the Binnaird ranch on Mud Lake, was committed to the insane asylum on Thursday afternoon after being taken to Idaho Falls Wednesday. She claims two children are in an orphan’s home at Helena, Montana, and says separation and an unhappy marriage unsettled her mind, leading to treatment.
Thirty five delegates appointed by Governor Hawley to represent Idaho at the third annual Inter mountain Good Roads convention in Logan Utah June 12 to 14. The program includes opening address by Governor Spry, a Good Roads Exhibit with lectures and stereopticon views, talks by E W James and G Batchelder, an address by Jesse Taylor, a parade and musical programs, automobile rides, baseball games and other events.
Stephen A. Chase, 73, treasurer of the Christian Science church of America, died at his Fall River home after several days of illness. He joined Christian Science in 1884, studied with Mary Baker Eddy in 1885, and was named to the church board in 1892 before becoming treasurer of the mother church, a post he held until his death.
Taft secured six Alabama delegates at large in a 53 to 0 decision and won additional delegation seats as the Republican national committee seated Taft delegates while Roosevelt forces gained rights for a later challenge. The Alabama case hinges on party organization legality led by Pope M. Long.
Marshall F Holmes brother of Col E F Holmes and pioneer builder of the Snake River valley died at his Chicago home. He was vice president of American Smelting and Refining Co and long served as president of Great Western Canal Co. He held real estate in the region and helped develop the Snake River valley. Idaho Falls Post. RailOfficials Injured Assistant Superintendent J N McLaughlin and A H King of the Montana division were hurt when a speeder left the track near Acon. King suffered a bad hip injury while McLaughlin recovered soon. Doctors treated both at local stations and in Idaho Falls.
The Philothea class of the Methodist church held a bridal shower for Miss Roxine Van Aken last week. The event featured lilac-decorated parlors and a generous array of useful and beautiful presents reflecting the class’s esteem ahead of her early June wedding.
Warren G. Harding of Ohio, a delegate at large, will place the nomination of William Howard Taft before the Chicago convention this month. He has received Taft's letter requesting the speech and has wired his acceptance. Harding, once GOP gubernatorial candidate in 1910, was defeated by Judson Harmon.
Washington reports the general staff issued a preparatory order for dispatch of about 6000 troops to Cuba. Four large army transports at Newport News to be commissioned, with troops drawn from Plattsburg, Fort Porter, Niagara, Governors Island, and Forts McPherson and Oglethorpe. Marines landed at Santiago and Punta del Sul as Cuba crisis escalates. President Gomez urges Cuban arming and Congress to approve extra military funding. Four battleships of the Atlantic fleet and the gunboat Paducah to secure Cuban waters.
The three day old infant son of Mr and Mrs Fred Gretsch died Saturday and was laid to rest Sunday in the Grove City cemetery.
