State Tax Rate Set at 13.6 Mills in Major Readjustment

State Auditor W G Sargent fixed the state tax rate at 13.60 mills, up from 13.50. The increase arises despite a rise in assessed valuation of about 19 million dollars due to higher interest and sinking fund costs. Total last year appropriations were 737 000, this year 888 000. The levy will be divided among state purposes institutions charities roads current school and interest and sinking funds. County boards in 26 counties will certify the levy to the assessor for tax rolls.

Votes for Women Night at Commercial Club Hall

A benefit event for the local W C T U will be staged tonight at the Commercial Club Hall under Mrs Jose E Chavez. The program includes a comedy Votes for Women music and recitations. Admission is twenty five cents. All are invited for an enjoyable evening.

iBoy Trapper Reels In Immense Bobcat Near Belen

The young son of Tony Brick, a champion trapper, set snares along the Rio Grande east of Belen and on Tuesday found a large bobcat. The trap gripped the animal at the shin bone and toes as it struggled. The hide is praised as a beauty and the boy refused several offers for it.

Sunday services and Epworth League schedule announced

Clyde Keegan, pastor, and P. P. Simmons, Sunday school superintendent, preside over 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. services. Enrollment exceeds 425 with several absences noted from Langdon Watson Paul Simmons Herman G Baca and Miss Anderwerth. The 5th and 6th graders show strong attendance while the 9th grade excelled in U S History with five of seven at ninety plus. State Receives 40 604 80 From Forest Reserves

Santa Fe New Mexico October 20 The state treasurer receives a Washington check for 40 604 80 ten percent of the proceeds from New Mexico national forest reserves This money will be divided among counties with reserves based on forest acreage Funds go half to county road funds and half to county school funds Apportionment will be announced later The reserves include Alamo Carson Chiricahua Datil Gila Jemez Lincoln Manzany Pecos and Zuni.

New Road About Completed in Clovis Area

George W. Singleton from the railroad camp in the city announced that the Colo mar to Clovis line is completed within test miles of Texico. He expects the steel laying finished by month’s start with extra work and a siding at Muleshoe. Singleton favors a monster celebration in Clovis and a special excursion train to mark the link in Santa Fe Gulf to Pacific line.

Mrs Fenley Fends Off Burglar In Narrow Escape

Mrs. Fenley wife of Conductor Fenley faced a daring attic intrusion Tuesday night. The burglar entered via the attic hatch and attempted to descend. She leaped from a window then, fearing for her child, returned for it and fired a revolver drawing neighbors. The intruder fled leaving only a faint trail.

Annual Meeting of New Mexico Educational Association

The twenty eighth annual convention of the New Mexico Educational Association will meet in Albuquerque November 24 26. Principal speaker will be U S Chief Educational Officer P P Claxton.
