Assessments Rise in New Mexico State Valuation for 1913

The state board of equalization raised the total assessed valuation by 7.65 million dollars to 91.73 million for 1913 from 84.09 million in the prior year, with Colfax county posting the largest increase and Sierra the smallest. Final one third valuations were adjusted after corrections, with reductions and increases detailed by county. Valencia and Colfax show notable shifts in final taxable values.

Coleman Clovis Cutoff Nears Completion

The Santa Fe cutoff from Lubbock to Texico is under construction and will be finished in a few weeks. When open it will provide a Gulf to Pacific route. Railroad commissioners praise the project for standardized design, heavy rails, low grades, wide embankments, and deep cuts suitable for heavy engines and long trains.

Chicken Pie Supper Postponed to Monday

The Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church postponed the Chicken Pie Supper to Monday evening October 20 due to the Commercial Club Dance. A large crowd is expected with music by the Sunday school Orchestra and a full menu including celery chicken pie mashed potatoes cabbage salad bread butter pumpkin pie and coffee at thirty five cents.

Goebel's Honey Wins Two First Prizes at State Fair

E A Goebel proprietor of Dorado Apiary won first prize on the Comb and on Stra Honey at the Albuquerque State Fair. He also took a second prize and netted good cash from his exhibit. This was his first attempt and a valuable learning experience. Belen honey won first prize in both departments statewide, boosting local apiaries as demand exceeds supply amid high quality color and taste.

Work has begun on the new Rio Grande bridge in Belen with ten men under White and Duncan of Paso Bridge & Iron Company. Civil Engineer W D Ovle located the site, a strong crew will be maintained to meet the contract deadline, promising easier east side travel and more traffic through Belen, benefiting locals and tourists alike.
