Tariff Cuts and New Income Tax Under Proposal

A sweeping tariff plan reduces average duties on foodstuffs and farm products by about half and lowers wool and cotton clothing tariffs. Sugar tariffs are cut with a goal of eventual abolition in 1916. Meats, fish, dairy, flour, potatoes, coal, iron ore, lumber and many machinery classes see tariff elimination. Officials insist the changes will boost competition without surrendering markets to foreigners. The treasury will handle new income tax details for individuals, while corporations retain a 1 percent levy as part of the broader tax law. Special deputies and agents will organize collection.

Local H G Baca heads to Albuquerque for fair

Additional Local Herman G Baca will leave for Albuquerque this evening to attend the fair. A Luther League social at Miss Lucy Becker's home featured business, games, and refreshments. The Valencia County Road Board met with all members present, while the State Highway Commission has not accepted Raff’s resignation. L D Beckwith passed through Belen en route to California to launch Our California Home for the World's Model Colony at Atascadero. Fire crews from Belen reported active duty, with Carl Hamilton, F A Barron, H Jesse, and Coplin returning to runs and exams.

Valencia County Teachers Assn Meets in Belén NM

A Valencia County Teachers Association session opens at Belén High School with Frank Sanchez presiding, featuring Invocations, music, and talks on education value. The afternoon covers reading, school management, language instruction for Spanish-American children, and rural teacher popularity. All educators and patrons urged to attend.

Belen Public Schools elect officers and prep basketball court

The Athletic Association elected permanent officers and appointed an executive committee led by Paul Simmons as president and Mattie Harper as vicepresident. A basketball court space is being cleared with completion planned by mid next week. New lower grade pupils enrolled. several absent for the fair and others planning to attend Friday. Chicken Pie Supper At Local Church Friday Oct 17

The Ladies Aid of the Methodist Church hosts a chicken pie supper at the church on Friday evening October 17. In addition to hearty chicken pie and accompaniments, music will be provided. A large crowd is anticipated and a menu will be published next week.

Valencia County Schools Report Details Mixed Session Lengths

Valencia County schools show one district in session with 24 teachers across 14 districts. Nine to three month schedules vary by district, with an average teacher salary of 61.70 dollars. Saturnino Baca serves as county superintendent, and the census rises to 3593 from 3388 last year. In Albuquerque, M. J. Quinn, a Santa Fe coast line conductor, suffered a broken leg and two broken ribs after a derailment near Grants. he was taken to St. Joseph's hospital.

Alma Swayne Weds Wilmer Roberts in Early Albuquerque Ceremony

A wedding with many Belen residents occurred Thursday when Alma Swayne married Wilmer Roberts in Albuquerque at 6 30 am officiated by Rev Herman Williams. A wedding breakfast followed and the couple departed on the 8 30 train to El Paso. Guests included Misses Virginia Simmons Frieda Becker and Henry Davison. Don’t forget that Chicken Pie next Friday night.

Fergusson Seeks Public Lands For Western Good Roads

Congressman H B Fergusson introduces House Bill 8659 to grant Arizona Colorado Idaho Montana New Mexico Nevada Utah and Wyoming 250000 acres each of public lands for funding construction repair and maintenance of public wagon roads. The bill moves to the public lands committee with detailed land selection under state overriding boards and annual patent issuance by the Interior Department.
