Twelve year old T. R. Manderfield Armijo of Santa Fe captured first place at St Michael's College in a young elo cutional annual contest. His piece Quien Sabe featured Spanish and Anglo characters and drew strong audience and judge praise.

In Lovington New Mexico on May 11 Ed Love saw a large wolf near his house. He phoned neighbors who joined in an auto pursuit. Love wounded the wolf in range and the pursuing dogs finished it. The wolf was among the largest killed in the area.
Two Mexicans of a band of twelve smugglers were killed and others wounded in a running fight with United States river guards and Texas rangers fifty miles below Boquillas in Brewster County. Nearly 100 cattle were recovered.
Frank D. Safford, a hotel clerk, was convicted of perjury in connection with the $500,000 breach of promise case of Miss Rae Tanzer against James W. Osborne. He received nine months in federal prison and a $1 fine.
Charles A. Wilson a lieutenant in the Malone Detective service of Salt Lake City and former Louisville investigator was found in a Sacramento barge with a broken back and skull fracture. He died before hospital care. Police suspect murder after Wilson said he drank with a stranger and a letter identifying him to Governor Johnson was found in his pocket from Parley Christiansen an attorney of Salt Lake.
In Carlsbad New Mexico on May 11 a record automobile run was made by Joe Lusk and Mr and Mrs Charles Pruitt to rush a twin baby from Rushin ranch after it had eaten matches. They reached the hospital at 6 am, where prompt treatment saved the child which is expected to recover.
The British steamer Queen Wilhelmina of Hartlepool was torpedoed by a German submarine off Blythe on Sunday. Time was granted for the crew to abandon ship and they were picked up by a patrol boat and landed at Shields.
Laurence Scanlan bishop of the Salt Lake diocese and pioneer missionary of the west died after a long illness. He served the Roman Catholic Church in the region for many years.
