The Chicago Republican Convention nominated Judge Charles E Hughes for the presidency. He telegrammed he had no desire for the nomination and preferred to stay on the bench, but felt duty to respond to the party during a critical national period.
Mr. Wickersham says no third ticket after meeting with Mr Hughes in New York with Mrs Sue and Col. Roosevelt not involved. He asserts no political relations with Hughes this time and backs the Progressives, insisting the visit was not political.
A national conference between railroads and 350000 employees stalled after railroad leaders rejected the workers' demands. The offer included eight hour days and overtime but scrapped the double compensation rule. Brotherhood leaders demanded full-time service across all classes, sparking heated objections.
