London dispatches report Russian intent to strike a heavy blow in Hungary as Bukowina is occupied and Transylvania becomes a possible invasion target. Romanian nationals in the region may seek union with Russia amid continental upheaval. French and British correspondents head to Romania via Bulgaria for updates.
Prof R R Larkin of Las Vegas lauds Belen public and high school progress during a visit. He backs the High School and Manual Training and urges more teachers, a county high school building, and better conditions. Night school offerings include mechanical drawing woodwork blacksmithing bookkeeping shorthand and more with several staff assignments.
Secretary of State Antonio Lucero urges revision of New Mexico election laws noting vagueness on multi county candidacies and constitutional amendment votes. In Colorado, Fifth and Eleventh Cavalry units depart from Trinidad en route to Fort Lavenworth and Fort Oglethorpe as firearms from the strike zone head to Ft. Logan. Bonifacio Lucero relocates from Santa Rosa to Trinidad with family and business.
The attorney general states that able bodied Pueblo Indians are not exempt from road taxes. While roadways on reservations are not state controlled and lands are tax exempt, Indians may be taxed for roads outside their lands under state laws. Laguna police judge advises people not to pay tax.
County and legislative officers are to be canvassed by county commissioners with ballots furnished by the state and the results tallied by the state canvassing board. The law will define when amendments take effect. A list on bonds by treasurers of state institutions, including State College and Military Institute, is submitted by Mr. Lucero per Assistant AG Harry S. Claney.
Black Smallpox has broken out at Vera Cruz and the tropical town is in the throes of an epidemic, American Consul Can.
Dispatches from Vera Cruz report General Obregon in control of Puebla after heavy shelling and cavalry charges. Villa Zapata forces joined by Carranza troops before surrendering the city with the entire garrison captured. Rear Admiral Howard on the west coast reports San Blas favorable and withdraws Annapolis to Mazatlan while patrols deter German interests.
El Paso Texas January 6 General Villa issues order prohibiting exportation of all cattle from territory under convention forces effective today. Move aims to avert meat famine and follows discussions with General Scott. Villa expected to confer with Provisional President Gutierrez and Governor Maytorena on border actions. 8,000 Villa Beves reportedly moving toward Sonora to aid Naco campaign. Local notices reference residents and services in Belen and nearby towns.
