Beaver friends mourn the death of Mrs Kate Stafford at her Dalton City Illinois home after a brief illness. Her husband Mr Stafford rushed home from Beaver upon receiving the news. She formerly resided in Beaver and was known to many in the county, leaving a son and relatives. the Herald extends sincere sympathy.
Mrs O A Barnam from south of town brought a maize sample from her 26 acre field showing large well filled heads. The dry weather and early frost reduced weight but grain matured. The piece credits Beaver County women farmers for successful crops and suggests more reports from local women.
Mrs Thompson sister of Mrs Fred Jones of Forgan died Friday night at the home of Mrs Clyde Jones after a lingering illness not deemed immediately critical. Her husband was away in Eldorado Kansas with Clyde Jones seeking a location and planned to return for families. Four children are left, to be cared for by her sister in Peabody Kansas.
Rev J J Perkine Mr and Mrs E L Fickel Judge J A Spohn and Mr and Mrs Tracy visited Gray last Thursday night and organized a Beaver Chapter Red Cross with Jack Sima elected chairman Macyme Skinner named vice president Chloe Richard secretary and J H Neufeld treasurer. The group plans to advance Red Cross work in the area.
J H Perking and J O Judd attended Balko Friday night to organize a Red Cross branch. Prof Virgil Hurt led as office chairman with Mrs Hurt secretary and J J Neufeld treasurer. Community members show strong interest in donations and support for the effort.
Morgan of Big Jo Lumber returns from Missouri via Pond Creek with persimmons and large shellbark hickory nuts. A basket of Bartlett pears grown at Pond Creek is also presented. Probst Grain Company thanks Hed Cross for coal donation paid in full, aiding surgical dressings for front-line boys.
The criminal court of appeals denied Alfred Ault of Baca County Colorado an appeal from a one year sentence for horse stealing. The conviction rested on circumstantial evidence. Ault must serve the year at the state penitentiary in McAlester.
