The Fourth of July passed quietly in Beaver and surrounding areas as the harvest was underway to shield grain from grasshoppers. Farmers were occupied with thrashing and gathering the crop, delaying celebrations until after harvest. The piece contemplates future remembrance for returning soldiers and thanksgiving for liberty and blessings.
A wartime memorial request seeks an accurate roster of men who died in service. The compiled list will be given to the Oklahoma Historical Society to aid counties and towns in erecting monuments, ensuring correct spelling of names and ranks for public memory.
The second Butter Kist popcorn machine has been restarted and is powered without electricity. The Globe has a similar non electric unit. Homer McKay, back from overseas, bought Mrs. Hubert Griffy's home and will settle in Beaver with his wife. Mrs Griffy and her sons will return to Indiana to live with her mother.
F C Shea and wife, proprietors of the Narrow Gage Cafe, unveil a new Overland automobile after a week of preview chatter. The couple emphasize practicality and period-style charm in their presentation at the shop.
On Saturday night near the townsite line two Fords collided head on as W J Fry and Seth Skinner drivers disputed fault. Both cars wrecked. Pry loaded with harvesters. Skinner car carried several passengers including veterans recently returned from service. All riders shaken but not critically hurt.
Advertising has been issued to promote the Chautauqua approaching July 15 to 18. Tickets on sale with reports of satisfactory canvass results. Adult season tickets are $2 and children $1, with a varied program promising both pleasure and instruction for Beaver residents.
Frank Loughrin, president of the Bank of Beaver City and large landowner, topped this year’s wheat market by selling grain locally and at Morgan and Person, earning premium prices. He received $1.05 per bushel plus advances, and a $10 gold piece mounted as a water charm for the first 100 bushels marked at the elevator. He was the first to market at both Beaver and Person, earning a $2.26 premium and the Watch din. His early sales were aided by threshing wheat from the barge.
Rain visited the central county on the Fourth of July but did not curb celebrations since none were planned due to an abundant harvest. General moisture aided dry crops while harvesting losses were minimal, with only a few hours to a half day lost in some areas.
John W. Sims of Kiowa saw two large wheat stacks burn last week as threshing began. The fire, started by the engine, consumed the stacks but Sims had insured the wheat days earlier, covering most of the loss.
A garbled note reports a harvest climax in Beaver County during 1919. It mentions near constant work day and night for two weeks, with Sundays skipped to tend the shock of stock and wheat. Parts of the crop remain uncut in only a few places.
Mrs C A Allen reports a large, high quality fruit crop after spraying. Peaches apples and apricots in abundance with strong early harvest sales totaling 160 dollars in five days. Trees bend under heavy load and market is ready for weeks.
Mrs. C. L. Crawford of the Clear Lake Red Cross Branch visited Beaver last week and filed the final production report. All work is completed, funds totaling 82.26 were remitted, and the Lake Branch is praised for its active service and future readiness for the Peare time program.
Bob Lauxtrit of Brawley California nephew of Frank Laughrin was reported missing last October and his parents received War Department news this week that he died of wounds on October 5. Relatives and friends in Beaver County mourn the slain young man who had served overseas.
George Batman, a postmaster at Elmwood, and wife return Thursday from overseas service. He shows good health and has gained from service as Uncle Sam cared for him. Beaver Chautauqua invites all soldiers and sailors to events on July 5 with uniform admission and post-event discussion of American Legion matters. Mrs W F Cereon and Attie Villa report arrival in Los Angeles and pleasure with the Golden State. A spontaneous dance occurred at the ball with an impromptu display and a complimentary ice cream social hosted by Jeff's Place.
Frank Maple and family and relatives plan today to depart for a western motor journey. They will reach Cheyenne for Frontier Day and may travel through Yellowstone Park. Beaverville saw a famine during the past week with ice plant outages easing after July 4th.
