They cover field handling for tall and dwarf stalks, drying in sheds, threshing, baling, autumn marketing, and the need for autumn seed selection to improve straw quality and market value.
Raymond appears elated as he returns from Sunday School. His mother asks what happened and he recounts that the superintendent said something very kind about him in the morning prayer. The anecdote is noted in a Woman's Home Companion item.
A Farm Journal excerpt argues that housewives perform unseen labor and would reveal their true value if all wives quit cooking baking cleaning and mending. It notes labor disputes in history and asserts wives deserve far more pay and recognition for planning, routing, and managing the home.
A Watermelon booth at a summer fair drew large crowds. An artist staying at a hotel created red and green tissue decor with paper cut fruit heads and watercolor features. Slices of watermelon sold for ten cents each, served by a woman in bandana and apron. The booth’s warm weather appeal and novelty made it a hit, described in Women’s Home Companion August.
