Queen Competition Boosts War Funds in Jamestown
Jamestown War Purposes Funds Committee raised funds for fighting forces through a Queen Competition and a Big Gala Day on September 20. Queen Enid Moore led efforts as crowds over 800 attended a procession, raffles, concerts, races, and dances, with awards for floats and costumes. A £100 donation followed voting results.

An overflowing crowd at Institute Hall on Tuesday September 23 witnessed the crowning of the winning queen. Queens were announced as Queen of Army and Nurses Miss Enid Moore and attendants, Queen of Navy Miss Nancy Williams, and Queen of Air Miss Hetty Ralph. The Queen of Army and Nurses won with 157,874 votes and led a total fundraising of £1,653 16s 5d, as the director of ceremonies and returning officer tallied results.
