A guide by A G Burns from the Farmers' Union seed department outlines summer fodder options for South Australian farms. It covers soil preparation, fertiliser rates, and crop notes on Sudan grass, Saccaline, rape, maize, lucerne, chou moellier, mangels, and management tips for drought resilience and grazing or silage use.
The Commonwealth Prices Commissioner Prof D B Copeland approved sharp phosphate price rises driven by higher landed costs for rock sulfur and bags due to wartime imports. The hike reflects increased export F O B prices, freight, war risk insurance, and exchange rates with Ocean Island phosphate from Nauru cited as a major factor. The commissioner will continue a relief survey and keep the issue under review.
The article notes higher costs in sulfur materials since July 1, with Western Australia and Eyre Peninsula up £1 a ton, New South Wales Victoria and South Australia up 18s, and Tasmania up 13s. It contrasts imported brimstone reliance and warns against spreading unverified troop movement rumors in the AL.
