The Labor candidate for the Northern Division outlines a comprehensive wheat industry reform. It proposes asset revaluation to productive value, Commonwealth Bank financing at low cost, debt relief, and a state controlled board to purchase, transport, and market produce with fixed farmer prices. It argues current schemes fail and emphasizes long term stability over temporary fixes.
The piece accuses the present government of drift and inaction on economic security for farmers. It cites rising government revenue and large federal grants while alleging no real policy to help the wheat industry. It notes huge wheat stock carryovers in Argentina USA and Canada and sour prices over the past five years.
