The library announces regular additions featuring tales such as The Thousandth Man by Ruby Ayres and The Veron Mystery by H C Bailey. Readers may suggest new books. approved requests will be obtained by the committee.
On Sunday August 27 1939 Jamestown hosts multiple church services with Rev A H White at St James Jamestown and St Mary Magdalene Canowie, plus Baptist and Methodist meetings. Gladstone hosts C of E services at St Alban’s with Holy Communion and Evensong, and Georgetown Evensong followed by Gladstone services and a Sunday School anniversary led by Rev J L Asser of Laura.
The District Council of Georgetown adopts the prior year’s assessment as the 1949 40 assessment with needed alterations. The assessment may be inspected at the District Offices in Georgetown during reasonable times. Appeals must be in writing under the Local Government Act of 1984. The Council will sit as a Court on Revision on Sept 11, 1939 at 2 pm to hear appeals if any.
Mrs. A G Wood of Malvern formerly of Gladstone enjoys a holiday with Mrs. E A Gale in Gladstone. She renews old acquaintances during the stay. Her son Reg from Sydney paid a brief visit to Gladstone last week.
The annual general meeting gathered at the clubhouse on August 12 1939. Retiring president W J Tyler praised a successful season and new officers were elected for 1939 40 including president A P Tucker secretaries treasurers and committee members across various roles.
In Wirrabara, Crystal Brook defeated Gladstone in a windy semi final of the Northern Areas Football Association. Crystal Brook led 6 goals 6 behinds to 2 goals 1 behind at the first break, with Gladstone pressing in the second term as the wind favored the township end.
Crystal Brook triumphed 14 goals 12 behinds to 13 goals 16 behinds over Gladstone by two points after a tight match. Key scorers included G Gale and A Gale for Crystal Brook and J Leesue and P Leesue for Gladstone. Second semi final at Crystal Brook pits Wirrabara against Jamestown. central umpire E N Ellis.
Council members present discuss unregistered dogs and recovery of registration fees, prep for drafts of District Councils Association agenda items, urging action on AWU case and speeding in country towns. Several motions cover memorial gardens, road rent, railway crossing access, employee insurance, new clerk and overseer, and assessment procedures for 1939 40. Reports from wards approve further works for next month.
