The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners adopts a resolution to borrow ten thousand dollars by bonds for the purchase of land and construction of permanent buildings for an asylum for the poor. The election on November 4, 1884, will present the loan and the use of the land for an asylum to electors, with ballots marked For or Against the Loan and For or Against the erection of Public Buildings. The sheriff is directed to publish the proclamation. Sponges line advertising bath sponges also appears. The German Turner organizations in New York endorse Cleveland and seek national cooperation.
Bets on Cleveland and Blaine swirl through Manhattan hotels with figures like 2500 and 500 in play. A mass convention will be held at the Court House in Abilene on Saturday October 11 at 1 pm to nominate candidates for Dickinson County Kansas offices for January 1885. Delegates from the First Commissioner District meet after the convention to nominate a candidate for that district. The committee urges adherence to Democratic principles and calls all in harmony with the party to join the convention.
A Republican committee in Ohio sent a letter to late Maine statesman Lot Morrill urging him to defend Blaine for president. Morrill’s wife Charlotte responded that her husband, now deceased, would not support Blaine, criticizing the party and Governor Connor’s appointment of Blaine to the cabinet.
