Victory for Settlers in Kansas Railroad Land Case
Judge Brewer of the United States Circuit Court ruled against the Missouri Kansas and Texas and in favor of settlers, voiding patents granted to the Kansas City Lawrence and Southern Kansas Railroad for about 27000 acres in Allen County. The decision holds that the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe grant could not be transferred to the M K T, that the second grant superseded the first, and that the railroad company had no valid claim under the 1866 act. The ruling is hailed as a major victory for settlers and may be appealed to the Supreme Court.

A Texas movement under A. Hackworth aims to colonize Brazoria Matagorda Wharton and other counties with black settlers. A union colonization society in Dallas gathers leaders including Rev. A $50,000 fundraising goal is set for the Texas Home and Farmers Association by January 1 to support future colonization efforts.
