At Clay Center on September 1 the Democratic convention endorsed the national and state platforms, pledged support for Cleveland Hendricks and the Leavenworth 1856 platform, and urged victory in Fifth District elections. Joseph G. Lowe was nominated for Congress after others declined. Central committee named with Gifford, Dunning, McClure, McNaspy, Glass, and others.
The Atchison Patriot notes liberal republicans in Kansas number around twenty thousand and align with Thomas Moonlight. It argues Moonlight shares their anti-sumptuary and anti-prohibition stances, opposes monopolies, supports revocation of unearned land grants, open homesteading, strict labor laws, and open land to settlers, urging votes for him next November.
