Electrical lighting planned for Liberty statue
New York October 13 preliminary work on the electrical plant to illuminate the Statue of Liberty began with a vault in Parapet used as engine room. President Edward H. Goff of the American Electric Manufacturing Co donated a special plant for twenty 6000 candle power lamps with duplex burners and globes. Eight lamps will line thetorch balcony with reflectors to intensify light, plus base lamps to illuminate the pedestal exterior and interior lighting through the statue. The project costs about five to ten thousand dollars. Visitors surged to Liberty Island, prompting chartering of the Florence steamship for extra service from Jud Field to handle crowds.

New Canon Tightens Marriage Rules in Episcopal Convention
The sixth day of the Protestant Episcopal Church session in Chicago saw a push for stricter canon law on marriage and divorce. The committee proposed no consecration while debt exists, required parental consent for under eighteenth marriages, restricted divorce grounds to adultery, barred remarriage for certain widowed spouses, and imposed clerical penalties for violations. A separate plan seeks a permanent program for work among colored Americans.
