Readiness of Indians to adopt white trick astonishes
A Virginian river captain recounts a Utah Colorado New Mexico Arizona fuel supply contract era tale of Ute Indians betting on a lake shore rifle match. He describes loading three blanks to fool the crowd, winning eighteen dollars, then sharing knick knacks and returning to find the same tribe cleaning out rivals in a larger match. The narrative ends noting the Indians’ quick uptake of the white man’s ruses.
