British Ship Dannottar Castle Wrecked Near Career Ocean Island

A detailed tale emerges of the British ship Dannottar Castle, 1700 tons, sailing from Sydney to Wilmington, driven ashore July 15 near Career Ocean Esland after striking reefs on a coral bottom. The crew of 28 plus officers faced two days in open boats, with lifeboat survivors trekking about 1,200 miles to reach safety at Honolulu via Island routes. Local authorities in Hawaii organized aid, provisioning for six months and arranging a protective station on Ocean Island with water, trees, and supplies for future shipwrecked sailors.
