A dramatic tale unfolds through David Christ ix Murr about a daughter torn between filial devotion and a scheming suitor. We witness a quarrel over trust, a lover's despair, and a war torn path that tests loyalty, faith, and the bonds of family amid moral trials.
The piece praises the new administration for reforming government operations. It highlights Postmaster General Vilas’s control and efficiency, claims bipartisan praise, and lists actions such as curbing waste, saving hundreds of thousands in contracts, enforcing Indian treaties, expelling interlopers from reservations, and restoring millions of acres of public lands from fraudulent claims. It frames these as beginnings of the administration’s service to the people.
The piece attacks Senator Sherman for stoking sectionalism and supporting the Ohio platform while praising Grant's postwar unity stance. It argues Sherman seeks continual North South strife, agitating for presidential hopes, and labels him unfit for the Senate. It also cites Everett P Wheeler defending civil service reform and redressing partisan bias, appraising reformers who ignore historic party exclusions. The column closes with Grant’s last words and a meditation on death’s equality.
