A local store advertises vast carpet stock including 5000 yards of Tapistry Brussels and 2000 yards Imported Body Brussels at low prices. Hartford and Lowell wool carpets, window sashes, and a large parlor furniture line are offered, urging buyers to inspect first class goods by skilled workmen rather than cheaper home made items.
A Saratoga correspondent reprints two Mulligan letters from 1864 showing James G. Blaine soliciting access to a Little Rock and Fort Smith railroad venture and recounting his role as Speaker in protecting the land grant. The letters discuss securing Caldwell and Fisher interests, Blaine’s influence before the 41st Congress, and a pivotal chair ruling to aid the Arkansas project.
The Dubuque Herald argues that the slapdash nature of the candidate undermines his appeal to independents and conservatives. It compares Blaine to Douglas, noting Douglas’s fervent supporters but predicting Blaine will fail without firm backing, foreseeing a similar fate.

A Boston audience heard E. F. Pillsbury recount Blaine's Civil War service. Blaine paid 25 into a substitute fund, got 200 from the pool to hire a man, and later received 4000 bond and 200 from Augusta after the war. The tale, shared by a neighbor, notes veterans' tepid interest.
