Normal Institute Tenth Annual Institute at Abilene Kansas

The Tenth Annual Normal Institute of Dickinson county will be organized at the Central School Building Abilene July 19 1886 for four weeks led by Dr P J Williams State University C S Parmenter Baker University and J F Graham a State University graduate recently named Abilene High principal The Institute aims to present new work and methods with emphasis on professional preparation for teachers including those not yet certified The course of study prepared by the State Board of Education will guide sessions and board is available locally The event opens at 2 pm on the first day and invites public inspection of teachers for the coming year. Stephen Kelley of Philadelphia a G A R member was mustered into service April 21 1865 and discharged with honor in 1865 He is cited as killed at Gettysburg per Bates history and is said to have decorated his Gettysburg grave on Memorial Day.
