Republicans in New York and the Morton-Hiscock combine

The piece surveys New York politics with focus on Chautauqua County and the Morton-Hiscock combine. It analyzes Assemblymen Frost and Horton deserting Miller to join Morton and Hiscock, the impact on the party, and how these moves affect Miller's renomination prospects and future elections. It also notes reactions from local and national papers and hints at broader party tensions and implications for the fall.

Great Invention to Revolutionize Coal Mining by Portable Saw Machine

A Pittsburgh area coal-miner secured a patent for a mobile coal-mining line. The device uses circular saws on shafts powered by a small rotary engine mounted on a wheeled frame and can be air, steam, or hand powered. It undercuts the vein, saves coal, weighs under two hundred pounds, and could yield up to a twenty percent saving for mine owners and double earnings for miners. Ex Governor Curtin of Pennsylvania reportedly had a successful eye operation restoring sight.
