L. H. Faulkner and Company announce a winter boots and shoes sale during a financial crisis. They pledge to keep prices low for customers and invite all in need to call and benefit from the sacrifice in prices.
In the clothing room the store faces a tremendous stock and no money. Shoppers cannot afford to buy clothing outside and must find value here to stretch every dollar. The message urges buyers to shop locally to save money.
Stock Boots and Shoes proclaims 25 percent lower prices for 90 days in Abilene. The piece lampoons Republicans split and Judge Wishire’s Arkansas anecdote about Providence. It notes Senator Edmunds weighing candidacy, Meigs pushing Pension Office work for inauguration ball, Arthur signaling New Orleans exposition progress, Blaine's libel suit near end, and subscription pitches for the Reinector and World.
The Cincinnati Enquirer traces the rooster as a symbol for Democratic success from the 1840 Harrison campaign. It recounts editor Chapman in Indianapolis and a taunting headline that misjudged early results, the rooster then rising as a sign of Democratic victory and prestige in Hoosier history.
Before Vennor died he completed his alma nac for 1885 and it has just been issued. His forecast calls for a two year moist period spanning the Northern and Middle States and Canada. He predicted an open fall of 1883 with a mild unsettled winter and heavy rain and snow. He also foresaw a green Christmas and a mild New Year. Eastern Canada has largely matched these forecasts with little snow, open rivers, and mild rainy weather.
