Carlton mail robbery recall ends in shooting inquiry

Excitement in Carlton follows a repeat confrontation tied to a historic mail robbery. The injured accomplice in Salina to Carlton encounter identified one assailant, provoking a pistol draw and gunfire. The wounded man reached town to report, a warrant was issued, and a town-wide search was underway with the shooter still at large.

District Clerk Grillhart plans to return home. John White of Willowdale and T J Foley of Chapman were in the city. Real estate man Nickles of Hope and Dr McMahan of Hays called at the RefLector office. Frank Levi left for San Diego. Mr. and Mrs. VanSant and Mrs. Stambaugh with Miss Upshaw travel to McPherson Ohio and the East for about three weeks. Rochester visitor J W Erwin tours Omaha St Paul Minneapolis before returning. From Thursday's daily A A Fackler of Manchester and Elmer Lewis of Solomon arrived noon. Harry Young returned from Abilene to Herington. Prof Charles Purdy visited. Mrs Bleam left for Marion county. Barrs returned from Canada. Marshal Kirkwood's wife returned from Pennsylvania. W H Smith departed for Chicago for two weeks supply trip. Deputy Sheriff Leslie Thompson leaves for Scranton Pa to attend college two years then return to Abilene.

Quinns Court Aiding Warrants Sparked For Assault and Nuisance

L F Power of Rock Island swore out a warrant against McNulty a grader boss for assault and battery. An officer holds the warrant and will likely arrest McNulty this afternoon. George Calkins of Herrington filed complaint before Justice Quinn against Morris for maintaining a slaughter house nuisance. a warrant issued and Constable Appleman proceeded to Herington to arrest Morris.

A Mr. Harper living two miles north of town was sick with fever for several days. Neighbors were summoned as it was thought he might die, but Dr. Shook arrived and announced their services were not needed as the patient was not in danger. He is rapidly improving and will soon resume work.

Abilene Man Receives Letter From San Diego Resident

A letter sent to an Abilene man from Miller McAfee now living in San Diego claims he is prospering financially and has married well. It mentions Mrs Levi’s health, Jacob Sewinst’s family, and Jake building a house, while denying rumors of a second wife. The Re-lector notes Spot is thriving in business.

Pocket Book Stolen at Rinehart’s Restaurant

Mrs Rinehart left a pocket book containing sixty dollars on the counter while tending to a child at William Rinehart's restaurant on Third Street last evening. On returning the bag was gone. A man named Drubacker, a former proprietor, was in the room but no evidence. He was arrested and discharged.

Kansas case ends with Kreider discharge before Justice Quinn

State of Kansas versus Daniel Kreider before Justice Quinn resulted in the prisoner’s discharge. Kreider had hired Knapp & Bolster’s horse for about five miles, then rode to Hope and back, releasing the animal when unable to pay the livery. Morris, charged with maintaining a nuisance at Herington, appeared with Constable Appleman, pleaded guilty, and was fined five dollars plus costs.

Western National Fair Premiums At Bis marck Exposition

The Western National Fair Association issues a premium list for the Bis marck Grove exposition September five to eleven. Premiums across departments are unusually liberal with strong incentives for exhibitors, especially in live stock. Last year’s stock display was the finest in the west and the forthcoming show is expected to surpass it. Many entries are already recorded and more stockmen plan to enter large numbers. The speed ring also features generous premiums.

Union Pacific Offers Cheap California Excursions This Month

The Union Pacific plans low cost trips to California from Kansas City during the current month. Departures are from Abilene every Wednesday at 3:50 PM. The round trip fare is $6000 for six months with step-over privileges on any segment in either direction.

Wild West and Hippodrome in Abilene August 1887

A historical note describes the Doris & Colvin Circus performing in Kansas City and announcing a September 2 show in Abilene. It highlights the all around spectacle with the Wild West and Custer acts, the extensive menagerie, and the hippodrome racing, claiming a crowd of twenty five thousand in KC and urging attendance in Abilene.
