Congress Behind With Work Hints at Prolonged Session
April 5. Congress lags on three special orders and broad unfinished business. The Logan bill for army efficiency sits with Platts bill on Washington Territory statehood. In the House silver debate saved for three days next week while multiple appropriation bills stay in limbo. If Congress pursues all items, a September adjournment seems unlikely.

Inventions and curiosities of early modern times
A collage of brief notes on pre 1617 inventions, early rail transport in California, a lone population in Harlan County, and humorous or curiosities. It mentions the Wm Penn locomotive of 1835 in California still in service, a mechanical cow milker, no fewer than unusual factory gas effects in Cambridge, and a Philadelphia lecture on coal formation and world growth. It references Los Angeles founding by Spanish soldiers and early irrigation zanja systems benefiting eighty five hundred acres monthly.
